SUMMARY:Walnut Valley Metric
DESCRIPTION:ANNUAL WALNUT VALLEY METRIC \nThe Walnut Valley Metric routes travel through scenic Cowley County on gently rolling hills and lightly traveled secondary roads. Registration includes SAGs and lunch at Liberty Township School House.  The gravel route does include two “stone arch bridges” and two that you can ride to 1/3 of a mile from the route.  Several additional “stone arch bridges” are within .5 to .75 m on gravel from the 65 m road route.  There are only 1700 stone arch bridges remaining in the United States according to Cowley County website.  Interestingly\, 18 of those historical stone bridges are in Cowley County! \nProceeds from the ride benefit the Prairie Sunset Trail and Redbud Trail. \nNOTE: online t-shirt orders end 9/18/24. Water\, fruit\, cookies and other snacks will be offered. Restrooms will be available at SAG stops. SAG vehicles with water and mechanical assistance will run the routes. Riders unable to finish will be transported back to Winfield Recreation Center. Lunch will be available for all riders\, starting at 10:00 AM. \nThanks to Jimmy John’s for helping provide food for lunch and SAG stops. \nYour Health & Safety \nBe sure your bicycle is in good working order. Arrive early the day of the ride to check your bike and tires. \nOther things to remember: \n\nNo headphones or ear buds: you need to hear and be aware of those around you.\nCarry a tire pump and patch kit.\nFluid intake is very important: Remember to carry water bottles on your bike.\nEat before you are hungry and drink before you are thirsty.\nCyclists should ride not more than two abreast and should not impede the flow of traffic.\nStop for stop signs and red lights.\nCross railroad tracks at a right angle to prevent damage to your bike and possible injury to you. DESCRIPTION:Please join us as we have several needs and goals to help maintain one of the Best Jewels of our County\, the Prairie Sunset Trail  followed by our annual volunteer picnic!! \nHelp us maintain the Prairie Sunset Trail\, meet at “the shed” in Goddard Linear park on the east side near 199th Street W at 8:00 am next Saturday\, Oct 19th\, for our monthly workday.  Bring your personal water\, gloves\, loppers and chain saws if available.  Shovels for filling in cracks would also be good.  We will carpool to work locations if need be.  Following our work that morning please plan to join us for our annual volunteer picnic at the Goddard Picnic Shelter at 11:30. We will provide burgers\, hot dogs\, chips\, veggies\, cookies and drinks.  You are welcome to bring a side dish\, but there will be plenty.  So\, whether you can volunteer that day\, have in the past or would like to in the future\, join us\, learn more about what we do and who we are. \nIn case of rain please go to our FB page for updates or email us.  The picnic is in a shelter so that will take place rain or shine!

DESCRIPTION:Please join us this month as we have several needs and goals to help maintain one of the Best Jewels of our County\, the Prairie Sunset Trail!! \n\nCanopy trimming\, especially between 279th to Garden Plain & 151st to 167th\nWe also have additional cracks that have developed on the trail. So\, we again need to fill in the cracks that have developed due to our dry conditions from Lark to 199th and 119th to 135th\nArea west of 135th where we need to install the culverts needs some help in un-damming the branches that have accumulated prior to that work due to our recent rains\nWe have a wash-out area E of Tyler Rd that also needs some mayor attention\nTrash pick-up \nBridge W of 215th needs stabilizing …\n\nWe realize that we won’t get to all of these on Saturday\, but the needs never seize.  Temperature will be 50-60 but wind chill will be colder\, so dress in layers.  Don’t forget to bring your water\, working gloves and snack needs!! \nMeet at our shed at the SE corner of the linear park in Goddard at 8:00 am for assignments. \nBring loppers and/or chain saws for canopy trimming or a shovel\, hoe with a narrow end or tamping bar so we can break down the hollow spots under the cracks and fill them in with limestone. \nIf enough of us show up\, we can wrap it up quickly.\nPlease join us for 2-3 hours so we can keep the trail safe!! \nMark your calendar for Saturday\, Dec 14th\, 2024 for our next workday.  We are scheduling it for the 2nd Saturday so we are not too close to Christmas. \n  \nWe are forever grateful for your continued support whether through volunteering\, donating or\njust enjoying the trail.
